- What's the secret to being the top vote-getter at YOON & YANG?
"I'm very grateful. I'll keep learning and working with humility so that YOON & YANG and its competition-law group earn even better assessments in the market going forward.
"Corporate clients already have ample internal capabilities - legal teams, competition-law teams, external-relations teams. A law firm has to provide service beyond that. Competition law in particular deals with competition and transactions within a market, so a grasp of general laws like the Civil Act and the Commercial Act is a given, and it must be backed by a deep understanding of the industry and the market.

That's why, when I take on a case, I go to the site. In a recent shipyard subcontracting case, I went inside a ship under construction to check the actual work site and consulted directly with the people on the ground."
- What case stands out most in your memory?
"In a matter where a conciliation process was under way over an alleged violation of the Subcontracting Act, there was a case in which the complainant accepted YOON & YANG's arguments and withdrew its complaint to the Korea Fair Trade Commission. We refuted the complainant's claims in detail - the scope of the work, the cause of the costs and their reasonableness - and the complainant accepted this and withdrew the complaint. Usually, complainants keep their KFTC complaints alive to pin responsibility on the prime contractor, so this case was unusual.

"Personally, a case from my junior days stands out - a criminal matter in which, on legal reasoning alone, we overturned guilty verdicts at the first and second instances and secured a remand with instructions to acquit. I've heard from lawyers who recently joined the firm that it's even taught in criminal law classes. I was a junior at the time, but I threw myself into it day and night and contributed substantially, and it became the occasion that shaped my perspective and attitude toward cases."
- Is there anything you're careful about when handling competition-law cases?
"As market structures and economic conditions change like living things, they affect even established legal doctrine. For example, private-brand (PB) product transactions used to be governed by the Subcontracting Act, but recently industry and academia have pointed out that it's more appropriate to regulate them under the Act on Fair Transactions in Large Retail Business. In competition-law cases, companies sometimes take excessive criticism relative to the wrongdoing.

Even when a client feels the burden of public opinion, YOON & YANG tends to respond actively to keep the problem from spreading."
- You were also praised for a 'high understanding of corporate in-house legal teams.'
"Before going to law school, I worked for about three years in a company's legal team. I handled subcontracting and competition-law work, and I learned a lot from lawyers while collaborating with various law firms. I often sat in on management meetings to take minutes, and through that I naturally learned what companies want from law firms. That experience became a great asset in understanding client needs."
- Any final words?
"I think 'honesty' and 'an unbreakable spirit' matter. Rather than offering an overly rosy outlook to win a retainer or avoid criticism, my principle is to convey the situation and possible solutions exactly as they are, based on meticulous analysis. Attitude matters too. Even in a difficult, grueling case, I believe the true role of a representative is to fight alongside the client to the end and strive for a good result."
